man.goes humanIt‘s been a few months since I have come across an album that has stood out in its entirety. And I must say I have found it with this Delhi-based alt rock band Man Goes Human’s self-titled debut EP.

Categorized as an experimental indie rock group, this quartet – composed of Paul and Kaprila on the vocals, Shitij on bass, Anhad on drums and Noni on guitars- have performed at various arenas including The South Asian Bands Festival, The Scene for NH7 and Pepsi MTV Indies, been covered by CNN-IBN and have crowd-sourced a song for Motorola – all the while amassing attention locally in India as well as worldwide.

Embedding a healthy dose of noir into their music, the tunes have impressive beginnings , arresting guitar riffs , emotive vocals  and perfectly synced percussion that culminates into a crescendo of sounds, ensuring you would want to listen to this musical compilation on repeat.

I got in touch with Shitij via email to delve deeper into their process of making music. The obvious first question was the band name. “Most of our songs are based on certain human emotions. Lately, there hasn’t been too much depth in the lyrics and we wanted to make that the core of our songs. Deep down, one should be able to connect with that song, with what it stands (for). Hence writing about what one feels (at any point of time), makes the man go more humane. So basically adding a personal touch, an emotion suppressed within the subconscious to our tracks that everyone can associate with at some level.” Because of their varied backgrounds and diverse taste in music they draw inspiration “from various bands over time, some local artistes who have done well (and) considering the lack of support they got, they still created a niche for themselves”.

Although all of them gems, my personal favorites on the album are “Together” and “Fading”. The former has a very yesteryear texture reminiscent of the likes of Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd and the latter because of its eerie, evocative vibe. “Fading is based on a disillusioned guy, who is fed up of the world and wants to break away from the norm. It has haunting filler guitars and this has been compared to an OST from Quentin Tarantino movie by another blog!” explains Shitij and you have to listen to it to understand how on point that is.
He names “eeeee” as his fellow band members’ favorite track but “I’d “is his pick from the lot, which by the way, has one of the best endings on the album.

Any final notes? “Haha…we like to play shirtless! Also, we are a very performance-oriented band – (highly active) on stage. Plus we interact with the audience a lot- so it’s not only about the music you get an overall performance from us!”
